Sluggish Placements at IIMs: 5 to 15% students still unable to find right fit

This year the placements at IIMs noticed a good start, but now these IIMs are facing impact of the downturn. It is also gripping the IIMs and causing problems for students and placement cell as well. The issue and pressure is felt by both, students and institute as well. In some IIMs, 5 to 15% students of their batches are still finding difficulty to find right job offer for them.

Officials in charge of the placements say there are many factors which can be counted upon for this situation such as increased batch size, slow economy, and field preference among students made this season most challenging for institutes. Besides, this year institutes have approached more companies to participate in the placement process. In all, 13 IIMs there are 2800 students who have not yet find the best suitable job for themselves from potential recruiters.

Krishanu Rakshit, placements chairman at IIM, Calcutta said, "All IIMs have had trouble with placements this time." This year at IIM-C the placement season started on 3rd March, 2013, but till now it has been unable to place its full batch, there is more than 5% students who are still facing trouble in finding the right placements.

Last year, on the contrary, it has managed to place its batch of 350 students in just four days. A person associated with the placement process at IIM-C reported, "Had we had the same batch size as last year, all our students would have been placed by the third or fourth day. It's the final 100-odd with whom we are facing difficulty."

Similarly, at IIM-Lucknow, the batch size is 430, compared to last year’s 380. A member of the placement committee, said, "We have always managed to finish our final placements in a week, but this year they are still going on. About 10% of the batch is yet to be placed."
